Roots of the Spirit Exhibition which opens January 15th, 2020 at Artserve, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, reflects upon the power of black cultural expression that is now clearly emergent and trending in the contemporary global art market. Consulting curator, Ludlow E Bailey, is “extremely excited to witness the recent renaissance in black visual artistic production, as these developments are connected to the worldwide interest in black culture, and the rising investment value of contemporary African Diaspora Art globally”.

According to Mr. Bailey, “Roots of the Spirit Exhibition, will be a beautiful visual interpretation of the metaphysical infrastructure of African Spirituality”.

“ArtServe is proud to present Roots of the Spirit, the most comprehensive show on African diaspora art ever to be showcased in Broward County,” says ArtServe Executive Director Craig W. Johnson. “Many of these artists are on the precipice of global fame; providing them a forum fits our mission of supporting bold, socially conscious talent.”

The multi-media show will include works by more than 25 visual and performance artists from the African Diaspora. The exhibition will include Nigerian artist Moyo Okediji, Jamaican artist Ya La’Ford, Ethiopian filmmaker, Indris Kassaye, Afro-Cuban artists Manuel Mendive and Duwane Coates, African American artists, T Eliott Mansa, and Stan Squirewell, African American Opera singer, Kunya Rowly, performance artist Hattie May Williams, Haitian artists Samdi, Morel Doucet, Stephen Arboite, Asser Saint-Val, and Zeek Mathias among many others.

The Miramar Cultural Trust “Imagine Puppets”, a national collection of handmade figures by
contemporary African-American Artists will be included in the Roots of the Spirit Exhibition.

The show kicks off with an exclusive VIP reception and performance on Jan. 18, 2020, followed by a community reception on Feb.1 – The exhibition presents ArtServes’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, in the promotion of the visual arts. “We’ve chosen to kick off 2020’s socially conscious season with a celebration of Africa because that’s where the human story begins,” says ArtServe Executive Director Craig W. Johnson. “We are exploring not only the continent’s spiritual roots – but all of our roots. We are celebrating our shared origins and underscoring ArtServe’s commitment to
unifying communities through the arts.”

About the Curator, Ludlow E. Bailey, known as the “global cultural curator”, is the Managing Director of CADA (Contemporary African Diaspora Art). Mr. Bailey is considered one of the world’s leading experts on contemporary African Diaspora art and culture.
ArtServe resident curator, Sophie Bonet, will be taking submissions and scheduling interviews from South Florida artists interested in participating in the Roots of the Spirit .

The “Roots of the Spirit” should be on the “must-see” art list for the entire South Florida community.
